When a crime is happening, or when interviewing an individual about a crime, taking witness statements, or encountering anything else that might be interesting from a legal standpoint, taking screenshots is quite important. It is better to have too many screenshots than not having enough for the case you are building. Video proof is also valuable, but that is not the topic of this page.

As defined in Mileth Law, for screenshots to be legally sufficient to be submitted as evidence, they must be captured by the Darkages client itself, either by pressing the F12 button or by clicking the screenshot button in the client. Other methods, like the Snipping Tool or the Print Screen button, will not suffice.

It should also be noted that when trying to take a screenshot of a board, board post, or your mail, the screenshot button is not clickable, and the F12 key must be used to take a screenshot.

It is suggested that you check beforehand to ensure that F12 or the screenshot button works and saves a screenshot in the Darkages folder, which by default should most likely be found at „C:/Program Files (x86)/KRU/Dark Ages“, unless you have selected to install Darkages into a different folder.

The reason being is that Darkages is a very old program, designed before UAC was introduced in Windows Vista. In Vista and later, pressing F12 will most likely fail to save a screenshot. If you have installed Darkages outside of the „C:/Program Files (x86)“ folder, then pressing F12 will most likely work and save a screenshot.

In Mileth Law and possibly other places, it is suggested to run Darkages as administrator as a workaround for this problem. This is the quick and dirty way of going about it, however, for security reasons, it is highly recommended not to run programs as administrator unless you are making system changes. The better approach is to adjust the permissions of the Darkages folder.

If saving screenshots already works fine for you without running Darkages as administrator, then everything mentioned below can be ignored.

Fixing Darkages Folder Permissions

Adjusting the permissions does require admin rights, so the following will be done as administrator.

Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.

Copy and paste the following command into the dialog box:

icacls "C:\Program Files (x86)\KRU\Dark Ages" /grant Users:(OI)(CI)(M)

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER, which will run the command as administrator.

After that command is run, this should allow Darkages to save screenshots without needing to be run as administrator. It will also fix other file related issues, such as being able to edit the profile text and spell/skill text.

It is ill-advised to blindly run commands without understanding them, so I will break down what the command does.

icacls is the built-in program for editing access control lists for files and folders in Windows Vista and later.

„C:\Program Files (x86)\KRU\Dark Ages“ is the file/folder to be edited.

/grant Users:(OI)(CI)(M) grants the group „Users“ the „Modify“ (M) permission, and sets the „Object Inherit“ (OI) and „Container Inherit“ (CI) flags. This allows files and subfolders to inherit the (M) permission.
